Visiting the French battlefields

Year 8 students recently visited the French battlefields.

"Our day began in the early hours, but the sun was shining and we were on our way to France. We arrived at Vimy Ridge, a Canadian trench and saw huge crater holes and walked through a reconstructed trench. Our next stop was the Germany cemetery, this was important because there were 45,000 Germans in a small area. In the afternoon we went to the Somme where we explored a full scale battlefield and the Thiepval monument with 72,000 names of soldiers still missing. It was the most moving experience."
