Whole school council discusses extra-curricular activities

Following the recent Whole School Council meeting on February 5th, student representatives are taking a closer look at our extra-curricular landscape.

Led by our Chair, Hiera, in Year 11 and Secretary, Karan, in Year 9, the council is evaluating whether our current offer of 56 clubs truly meets the needs of all students.

Extra-curricular involvement is thriving in lower years; data shared during the meeting revealed a significant trend as students progress through the school. Year 7 leads the way with an impressive 63% participation rate but participation dips to 38% by Year 10 and engagement reaches a low of 14% in Year 12.

Hiera challenged representatives from Year 10, 11, and the Sixth Form to investigate the root causes of this decline, questioning if it stems from a lack of time, interest, or the relevance of the clubs currently offered. Interestingly, it appears some student-led clubs and booster sessions happen regularly but do not appear on the official register. Miss Webb will be investigating this further.

The council is currently reviewing the schedule to identify potential barriers to attendance. Key areas of focus are lunchtime versus after-school sessions and creating new opportunities. Some areas of interest that aren't currently available include, Christian Union for Years 10 and 11, boxing club, martial arts club, debating club and a reading club for students looking for a welcoming space to socialise.

To get an authentic check-in for our clubs, every council member has been tasked with attending a club over the next two weeks. Representatives will visit a club and evaluate the atmosphere, engagement and accuracy of information listed on Frog. These student write ups will feature in the end of term newsletter.

You can find more information about our current extra-curricular clubs on the website here, or on Frog.
