Outdoor fun at Thames Young Mariners

On Friday 20th March, 20 Year 8 students enjoyed an inspiring and memorable day of character-building at the Thames Young Mariners Outdoor Activity Centre.
Accompanied by Headteacher Mr House, Head of Year Ms Wilson, Assistant Headteacher for Personal Development Miss Webb, and our Inclusion Key Worker for SEMH, Miss Howden, the group embraced a full day of outdoor learning and personal challenge.
The experience was funded by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, providing young people with valuable opportunities to take part in outdoor education designed to enhance confidence, resilience, and wellbeing.
The day began with paddleboarding, a clear highlight where students showed enthusiasm, determination, and courage as they stepped outside their comfort zones and supported one another on the water. The session concluded with an exhilarating dock jump, met with excitement and plenty of smiles from everyone involved.
Following lunch, the afternoon offered a calmer pace as students developed practical forest skills, baking bread and cooking over an open fire. This provided a wonderful opportunity for teamwork and connection with nature.
It was particularly rewarding to see our ‘Back on Track’ students fully engaged in the experience, broadening their horizons beyond the classroom. Opportunities like this play an important role in supporting both academic progress and personal development, helping every student to grow in confidence, independence, and character.
