Students lead important assembly this week

Even though this has only been a four-day week for the students, there has been lots to enjoy in school.

This morning, I got to sample students’ food as they prepared three course meals. It’s always a joy to taste students’ perennial favourite (a brownie dessert) but also baked salmon parcels (cooked in tin foil with parsley, garlic and olive oil).

This afternoon I enjoyed seeing our Year 11 drama students, still a few days away from their GCSE exam performances. Walking into the school hall and seeing six different groups all applying the (near) finishing touches to their performances was a pleasure. The students’ commitment to character and attention to detail was superb. I wish them all the best with their assessed pieces before the Easter holidays.

International Women’s Day

I always think that when students talk well to students, the impact carries a different level. It was fantastic that earlier this week four members of Year 12 presented an assembly to all of our students about International Women’s Day.

This year’s theme is ‘Give to Gain’ and was explained by Aalia, Basma, Nafissa and Ruby. They talked through important ideas like equal pay and explained the origins of the day coming from protests from women against their poor working conditions in New York at the start of the twentieth century. The four students talked about the sacrifices women make, and how women are at the cornerstone of society. The way the four students spoke, with certainty and commitment, will have delivered that important message even more strongly. I am delighted that all have been nominated as this week’s Year 12 Students of the Week.

Wellbeing support

Greenshaw has been at the heart of an NHS pilot for several years now, working with Education Wellbeing Practitioners (EWP). They are employed by the health service, but work out of schools, enabling pupils to develop self esteem and confidence.

We have a new EWP who is looking to gather a range of views on mental health and wellbeing in schools. This will help them understand how the EWP role can best add value to and complement existing forms of support for children, young people and families in Sutton.  There is a confidential questionnaire at this link if you are interested. Thank you for taking the time to complete this.

Eid

We are aware that Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to begin on Thursday 19th March 2026. Families may request leave for one day of religious observance on either Thursday 19th March or Friday 20th March. A separate communication will be sent on Monday with a link to a form for families to complete.

I wish all Greenshaw families and students the best for a restful weekend and for those of our community that are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr on Thursday and Friday next week, I wish you Eid Mubarak.
