Charity fundraising, tugs of war, maths achievements – what a week!

We have been raising funds for St Raphael’s Hospice over the last two terms.
Fun Friday
Well, that was something to witness. This week’s Fun Friday event was a tug of war competition, between students who won the lucky ticket and teachers of each year group. In the bright spring sunshine at lunch, I witnessed students and staff work together in teams, equally committed to being on the winning team!
I saw the Year 7 team come second to a strong staff team, but then saw Years 9 and 11 both beat their staff teams. I did also see a Year 8 win against the teachers, but did not realise it was a ‘best of three’. Well done to all who took part and commiserations to any staff on a losing team. The pupils definitely deserved it!
Well done to our Year 12 students
We have been raising funds for St Raphael’s Hospice over the last two terms. This has been part of St Raphael’s Charity Entrepreneurship Challenge, and the £750 we passed to St Raphael’s was all the product of a dozen of our Sixth Form students. They designed the fund raising campaign that included our Year 7 and 8 movie night, our Easter Fayre and flowers for Valentine’s Day.
Good luck to the students in Year 12 who on Tuesday go to a presentation, where they will present their efforts in competition with three other schools. As well as doing the great thing of raising money for a local hospice, they may also get the recognition of being great entrepreneurs. Good luck on Tuesday.
Mathematics superstars: UKMT Kangaroo National Results
Following their performance in the Intermediate Maths Challenge, 14 of our top mathematicians were invited to compete in the UKMT Kangaroo follow-on rounds. This invitation is extended to the top-scoring students across the country, placing them in the top 1% of young mathematicians in the UK.
Congratulations to our students who secured national certificates for their high scores:
-
Best in School and Silver Award: Ron (Year 9) – outstanding score of 85!
-
Best in School and Silver Award: Dhivyan (Year 11)
-
Silver Award: Inana (Year 11)
-
Best in Year 10 and Bronze Award: Huvin
-
Bronze Awards: Nathan H (Year 9), Seongju (Year 9), Ralph (Year 11) and Nickish (Year 11)
To qualify for this round is also a massive achievement. Our congratulations also go to the following students for representing the school at a national level: Manasri, Karan, Josiah, Aarav, Ojen, and Saadit.
GL standardised assessments Year 7, 8 and 9
Next week students in Year 7, 8 and 9 will sit tests in English, maths and science from Wednesday onwards. The English test will assess English skills and Reading Comprehension. The Maths test will assess mental maths and applying and understanding maths. The Science test (only for pupils in Years 8 and Year 9) will assess knowledge and understanding, application and working scientifically.
These tests will provide their teachers with data that allows pupils to be identified who may need additional support. It allows us to identify patterns of performance to ensure our teaching is going well, as well as giving us a comparison of our students’ current attainment against national figures from other schools sitting these tests.
We will share individualised reports for your child, highlighting strengths and areas for development in each subject and will also include strategies to help support progress.
