Adaptations for the extreme weather conditions

You will all be aware of the very hot weather at the moment, and the various warnings that have been issued.

We are making a number of adaptations to the school week, the first one of which is disappointing for our youngest students.

Year 7 and Year 8 Sports Day cancelled (Tuesday 23rd June)

Sadly, even though we have made many adaptations to our sports day, the forecast has continued to increase over the weekend. In the light of the Met Office amber warning, it is no longer safe to hold our sports day. Year 7 and 8 students should therefore arrive at school tomorrow as normal, with their books for tomorrow’s learning.

Preparation for hot days in school

Please encourage your child to wear a hat to and from school, apply sun cream in the mornings and bring a large filled water bottle with them.  Students may also wear Greenshaw PE kit, as that is often the cooler choice. However, if they prefer to continue wearing standard school uniform, that is also absolutely fine.

Ending the school day early (Tuesday 23rd June - Friday 26th June)

Due to the hot weather, we will be operating a shorter day for each of the next four days, closing at 1.30pm each day this week.

Whilst the building work is taking place, there are unfortunately no canopies or shaded areas outside, and we are unable to keep students cool and safe during lunchtime. We are also keen that students travel home before the hottest part of the day.

Students entitled to a free school meal can take this at morning break, or at lunchtime. We will keep the dining hall open for a while after school ends at 1.30pm, but my advice has been for students to not remain in school during the hottest part of the day and head home and stay indoors.

Hopefully, these adaptations mean that we are keeping school open with as much learning as possible. Four lessons will happen each day this week, and we can create conditions that are safe with the adaptations proposed. Many of our classrooms have air conditioning, and if students remain hydrated, I am sure this will be a workable solution.

We will review the week as we go, and hope that this heatwave clears before next week comes around.
