First week of school trips well under way

This has been an unusual week in our school with the untimely passing of the person who was the longest serving member of staff in the school’s history.

Thank you to those of you that have expressed your condolences. If you want to understand the difference an amazing teacher like Mr Gardner can make, please read the ever-growing page of tributes on our school website here.

Curriculum Enhancement Trip One

Our first day of summer term trips was hugely successful on Tuesday. The attendance was great and students had some brilliant experiences, many of whom were visiting certain locations and types of venue for the first time.

Our students travelled to Ninja Warriors, Hampton Court, St Paul’s Cathedral, Neasden Temple, Kew Gardens, Port Lympne Safari Park (pictured) and the beaches at Bognor and Worthing. They also experienced key scenes from their GCSE English Literature course with The Globe Players and even went on a cruise on the River Thames.

I am looking forward to my trip on Tuesday to Worthing, where I will be with Year 9 students, gathering data from the beach and completing an urban study in the high street.

New beginnings

It has been brilliant to meet our new Year 6 students on Wednesday, and our prospective Sixth Form students on Thursday. Our Year 6 students toured parts of the school, experienced a lesson and were absolutely delightful – a tribute to their primary schools and families. Our Sixth Form students were welcomed by some of our outgoing Year 13 students, and we started the first parts of their induction into A Level life. Both year groups will continue their induction in September, but we hope that this will give assurance and a sense of excitement before the new school year.

Sporting achievements

On Wednesday afternoon, we ran our Sports Awards. Every one of our school sports teams was recognised for their achievements, with awards given in each section to a ‘Player’s Player’ and a ‘Manager’s Player’. To hear the students speak so well and in a complimentary way about their peers was very impressive. The event finished in time for all of our students to get home for the football World Cup, although not all students might have returned to see the first goal… but should have been home for the two Harry Kane specials!

Last night our brilliant Greenshaw dance troupe, named The Company, performed live at the exclusive Cadogan Hall in Sloane Square, central London. The Company was selected as one of only 20 groups from an initial list of 110 groups, so our congratulations go to our amazing dancers and Miss Izzard, as always supporting dance at Greenshaw.

Fun Friday

Today saw our sunny version of ‘Sponge the Teacher’ for our Fun Friday celebrations. We tried this in the cold days of the spring term and today’s seemed a much better idea in the sunshine. Many thanks to the staff who volunteered, and, of course, the students who so willingly took part!

Students of the Week

Well done to each of the students below for being nominated this week. I look forward to hearing about each of their achievements and the contributions that they have made to the school.

And finally…

I know some local secondary schools have decided to open later on Monday, acknowledging that some of our students may be setting an alarm for 01:00 on Monday morning to see England’s latest World Cup games, and others have decided to keep the normal start time.

At Greenshaw, we are remaining open at the normal time, and students should arrive from 8:20am on Monday in Years 7 to 10 and at the normal start time for the first lesson of students in Year 12.

Wishing you all the best for a restful weekend, and that the footballers can make it a double weekend of victory, following the England Women’s team beating Australia in the T20 Cricket World Cup Final on Sunday.
