Well done all: we got through that very hot week

This was a week of unparalleled challenge. We did have a week in 2022 of high temperatures, but not to the high levels that we have had to endure this week.
Although it is not easy, I am confident that we have made a really sensible range of adaptations this week. These included: allowing all students to wear PE kit, where they chose to; ending school before the hottest part of the day; reducing access to the uncovered playground; adapting PE so that all later lessons were indoors (in the fitness suite or spin rooms, both of which have air conditioning) or into classrooms; and moving Year 10 and 12 exams to an earlier part of the day.
I want you to know that Greenshaw students have been fantastic this week, as you would expect. They have been courteous, taken responsibility for their own self-care, and carried on – and I also thank staff for their approach as well. This has been tricky, but with the right attitude from our people (older and younger), and some key adaptations, we have got through this week.
From Monday 29th June, we will return to normal school finish times: 15:00 for Years 7 to 10 and there will be normal period 6 lessons for Year 12 students, where they have them.
Clubs, before and after school, will run as normal.
Uniform arrangements for next week
The weather appears to be cooling over the weekend. However, there may still be residual heat in the buildings on Monday as the school site will be closed over the weekend. So here are the arrangements for next week:
-
Monday 29th June: Students may wear PE kit, regardless of whether they have a PE lesson.
-
Tuesday 30th June: Curriculum Enhancement Day - pupils should wear the clothing identified for the specific activity. Information about each trip is attached.
-
Wednesday 1st July onwards: Normal school uniform for all pupils. If they have PE that day they should wear PE kit. If not, they should wear the normal shirt and tie combination.
Curriculum Enhancement Day 1 – Tuesday 30th June
We are all super excited about the first of our three days of trips and visits next week. If you have any queries, please check the attached details and if you need to make contact with us before Tuesday, please contact enrichmentdays@greenshaw.co.uk
Meal plans for September 2026
As you may have seen on the news, the government has recently announced a major overhaul of the national School Food Standards. The goal is simple but vital: to reduce high-sugar and highly processed foods in secondary schools, while dramatically increasing fibre, wholegrains, and fresh produce.
The food we offer our pupils is part of our education offer – helping children understand nutrition and how to balance food groups is a responsibility for school. We want to go further than we do at the moment, particularly making the healthy option the easiest – and tastiest – choice for our students.
We are expanding our range to offer modern, nutrient-dense alternatives that don't compromise on flavour:
-
Vibrant poke bowls: customisable, fresh bases featuring lean proteins, crisp vegetables, and wholesome grains.
-
Protein bowls: specially designed to keep students full and focused throughout their afternoon lessons.
-
Homemade smoothies and expanded fresh fruit bowls: a natural, vitamin-packed alternative to sweet treats, prepared fresh daily by our kitchen team.
-
The wholemeal switch: to significantly increase dietary fibre, all of our hot offer counters will now feature a wholemeal option for our bread and pasta dishes.
Some of this is a deliberate new step forward, but we have maintained standards ahead of the changes. For example, all of our food is already freshly baked or steamed – we have not fried any food in the Greenshaw kitchens for several years.
