Student newspaper hits the stands

Thank you to all of you for supporting such great attendance this week.
Yesterday, the attendance at Greenshaw was nearly 4% higher than the national average. You may well feel that I am repeating myself here… and I am, because this is so important.
Being in school every day is good for learning, strengthens our students’ sense of belonging and makes each lesson easier. I am delighted that our attendance has been so good this week, and am very proud that Greenshaw students come to school with such commitment.
The Greenshaw Chronicles – our school newspaper
I had the pleasure of reading the second issue of the ‘Greenshaw Chronicles’ this week. Our student edited and written newspaper has a wide range of content, including interviews with staff, features on wellbeing, book reviews and a page of jokes.
The cover picture for this issue, drawn by Angeline in Year 7, illustrates a very thoughtful piece by one of our Year 10 students, entitled ‘Who I Want to Be vs. Who I Have to Be’. Jillian explores the different influences she felt when she made her GCSE subject choices, as well as asking large questions like ‘Do you ever stop and wonder what it could have been like if you had chosen another path?’.
Well done to our students involved for all the various items, and a massive thank you to Miss Waqas for creating our journalism team. I look forward to reading the next edition at the start of the next school year.
An electronic copy of the newspaper can be found on our website here.
Sports Day – Thursday 18th June (Years 9 and 10)
Our Head of PE, Miss Graham, has already sent letters to all families, and tutor groups in Years 9 and 10 have had assemblies explaining the day. Yesterday, for all tutor groups, there was a ‘colour draw’ where each tutor group was allocated a colour. Each student in the same tutor group will have a headband and wristband of the same colour (red, yellow, light blue, navy blue, etc) and students have already started making posters and banners for their tutor groups.
To remind families of Year 9 and 10 students: all students should arrive directly at the track by 8:15, not come to school first; and on arrival students should sign in with their tutors in the middle of the track. All students, whether competing or supporting, should wear PE kit and sports trainers.
At this distant point, the weather forecast appears to suggest that it should not be wet, and it may be fair weather. As always, we ask that students are ‘sun safe’. This means all students should wear a hat, carry a water bottle and apply sunscreen. There will also be gazebos for students to access shade. Should there be any significant change to the weather, we will text families next week. The Year 7 and 8 event will take place the following week, on Tuesday 23rd June.
Can you take part in ‘The Big Future’ survey?
All young people and families of children are being asked to give their views about the things young people enjoy as well as the challenges they face. This includes the local areas that we live in and what might make these better, and the survey then moves onto questions about what a good childhood might look like.
This afternoon, one of our Year 10 students is talking to all of our students about how to take part through a video on Frog. All of our students are encouraged to take part, to raise their voices and understand that this is an important feature of democratic society.
There are two different surveys, one for parents and one for children. As a parent myself, I have completed the survey. It only took me about three minutes, but I think it is an important activity to support. If you have time to take part, please follow this link here for families, and please ask your child if they have taken part as well.
