GCSE and A Level exams swing into operation

Summer term in secondary school means that public exams (GCSEs and A Levels) are starting.

Our Year 11 students had their first exams in the sports hall this week (drama, sociology and Turkish listening) and they swing into full operation next week. The A Level exams for Year 13 also start next week.

For all subjects, we continue to run all of their lessons, as revision is an activity that should happen in addition to school lessons. Many of our subject teachers are also exam board markers, so give the kind of informed advice that students would not get from a revision guide at home. On the day before an exam, we run a ‘booster’ that clarifies understanding of the key topics for the next day’s exam. On the day of any exam, we also run a ‘warm up’ before it. The aim of a ‘warm up’ is not to cloud the students with too much content, but to simply recap the key elements of the coming paper and advice about timing and exam technique.

I would like to extend my best wishes to all students in Year 11 and Year 13 (as well as a handful in Year 10) for their forthcoming examinations. Prepare well, and take advantage of all the advice available in school. Good luck!

Victory in Europe Day

Yesterday marked the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. As a school, we marked this with an assembly led by Mr Bell, our Head of History. He explained the importance of VE Day, and how it marks the end of the awful war in Europe in 1945. Mr Bell also encouraged students to reflect on the current situation in areas of conflict around the modern world, and think about the human costs of war. As Mr Bell reminded us all, this is at any time in the past or now in the present.

Although it was a sombre assembly, we feel very strongly that as our students progress through secondary school it is our responsibility to give them a good understanding of the world around them. I hope we did this, as well as playing our part as a school in an important national event.

Clubs are up and running

All after school clubs have been running from Tuesday onwards this week. Please take some time with your child to look at Frog with them, and review the videos each club leader has made that explain the activity. All clubs are free of charge and pupils can sign up using Frog.
