The 2014 School Athletics Championship, hosted at the recently named ‘David Weir Arena’ was the perfect ending to a fantastic year of sport. Despite the unpredictable weather the night before, we were determined to ensure that the show went on, with many of our athletes keen to emulate the recent successes shown at the District Athletics championship two weeks earlier.

The morning was welcomed by the cooler overcast conditions, allowing competitors to perform to their maximum capabilities. As the medals were placed round the necks of the gold medallists, records began to fall, with a special congratulations to Jade and Jody for breaking the Year 7 girls 200m and 300m records respectively. In Year 10, Reece, who had previously beaten Harry Aikines Aryeetey’s 100m record at the District Championships with a time of 11.00, attempted the school high jump record, narrowly missing out by a few centimetres.

The conditions quickly warmed up and so did the atmosphere as the relays got underway. The highlight of the afternoon must include the 8x50m relays, where three of the four boys races were won by Green house. As the crowd tucked into their ice creams, they were treated to some spectacular 4x100m races, with many relying on a ‘photo finish’. The track events were completed by the prestigious staff relay, with teams represented by each house, Senior Leadership, Year 10 boys and a strong PE team. A fiercely competitive race, cheered on by the whole arena and deservedly won by the Year 10 students… just!

The early favourites for the trophy were current holders Blue House. Despite a fantastic effort by the other three houses, it was not enough to beat Blue House, who came through as overall champions.

For now, it’s a hard earned rest for all staff and students involved. Thank you to everyone who made the day one to remember.
