Greenshaw High School

students attend We Day 2014

On Friday 7th March, Greenshaw’s community ambassadors attended Wembley arena for the first ever UK 'We Day'.

Every student attending the event earned their ticket, by completing one act of local, and one act of global service.

The day was inspirational for all students and teachers, with an aim to encourage young people to get involved with charities and to 'make a difference'. We listened to many empowering speeches, for example Malala Yousafzai, the young lady who was shot in the head by the Taliban for speaking out for girls’ education, “your courage should be more than your fear.” Prince Harry spoke about his charity Sentebale; US Vice President Al Gore talked about climate change and the effects it has on communities; and Martine Wright, the paralympian and worst-affected survivor of the London bombings, spoke of the importance of self-belief, “anything is possible as long as you believe.” The afternoon was rounded off with entertainment from celebrity ambassadors Dizzee Rascal and Ellie Goulding.

The co-founder of Free the Children, Craig Kielburger, closed the event with a quote from Nelson Mandela, to inspire action for social change: “It always seems impossible... until it's done.”
