About

Greenshaw has a well established and popular sixth form, which provides a wide range of courses. It attracts students of all abilities and with a variety of ambitions both from within the school and from other secondary schools in the area. There are currently well over 200 sixth formers who are encouraged to be independent, responsible and self-disciplined young adults and to achieve excellence in their chosen course of study.

The sixth form option courses reflect the differing needs and abilities of students and can be broadly categorised as follows:

  1. AS/A2 level: students in Year 12 take four subjects to AS level, as well as General Studies, with the expectation of continuing at least three to A2 level in Year 13. We offer some 25 subjects at AS level, including ‘vocational’ courses in Information Technology and Travel and Tourism.
  2. Courses are available at Intermediate Level in Information Technology, Leisure and Tourism and Health & Social Care. For progression purposes, Intermediate level courses are the equivalent of 4 GCSE passes at grade C or above. Students have the opportunity to resit Mathematics and English Language.

All AS/A2 students in Years 12 and 13 take AS General Studies, and they may opt to continue their studies to A2. They study modules in:

  • Culture, Morality, the Arts and Humanities
  • Society, Politics and the Economy
  • Science, Maths and Technology

All sixth form students are involved in the acquisition of Key Skills in application of number, communication, information technology, problem solving, working with others and improving own learning and performance.

The sixth form tutor group system enables all students to follow a programme of personal and social education and to be involved in debating current issues. Students are given extensive advice about careers, further and higher education. Individual academic mentoring forms a major part of the tutorial programme.

Sixth formers play an important role in supporting teachers in the lessons and tutorial sessions of younger pupils. They are also active in clubs and practices at lunchtime and after school, helping younger pupils and assuming leadership roles. Some students take the Community Sports Leader Award, while others take an introductory course in counselling. Some work with Sutton Volunteer Bureau to help disadvantaged people in the local community.
