Greenshaw High School

PSHE

The Government’s review of PSHE states that today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive opportunities, but also challenges and risks.

In this environment, children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. At Greenshaw High School, PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education), Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), along with health education, is a timetabled programme of age appropriate learning which guides our young people to grow and develop as individuals, members of families, our school community and society.

The lessons are age appropriate, sensitive and inclusive, with respect to the backgrounds and beliefs of students and parents. Students can put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts.

We are clear that parents and carers are the prime educators for young people and our curriculum complements and reinforces this role.

Where possible lessons are supported by visits from a range of specialist speakers who give presentations on topics such as health and personal hygiene, relationships, crime, drug and solvent abuse.

British values

PSHE lessons at Greenshaw aim to explore British values and prepare students for life in modern day Britain:

  • Students develop an understanding of democracy and the rule of law, with particular focus on respect for the law and appreciating that law protects individual citizens and is essential for wellbeing and safety.
  • Students are encouraged to be respectful, having tolerance for other people and different cultural traditions. Students understand the importance of identifying and combating prejudice and discrimination.
  • Through the Penn Resilience Programme and our commitment to Anti Bullying Week, students are encouraged to reflect and accept responsibility for their behaviour and understand how they can contribute positively towards other people.
