Religious Studies

Welcome to the Religious Studies Department.

All students at Greenshaw study Religious Studies in Years 7 to 11

The approach taken is one which aims to encourage students to:
•    Learn more about the global society in which they live
•    Examine their own beliefs
•    Analyse a variety of views
•    Consider life’s big philosophical questions
•    Examine their own decision-making and behaviour through a study of contemporary issues.

Through this we hope to contribute to:
•    The spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of students
•    Community cohesion on a local and national level
•    Promotion of equal opportunities
•    Encouragement of diversity
•    Critical thinking and writing skills essential to success in the workplace

In Years 7 and 8 students study:
Six major world faiths, their core beliefs and how these are expressed through practices and lifestyles
Attitudes to community, charity, human rights and prayer

In Year 9 students study:
The philosophy of religion and the reasons behind religious belief
The journey of life and how religion affects believers and their communities
Religion, society and politics

In Years 10 and 11, students study a course entitled SRS: 'Social and Religious Studies'. Through thematic learning of social and ethical issues such as human rights and medical ethics, family life and poverty, students are able to reflect on a variety of viewpoints and analyse their own thoughts and responses to the issues raised. They are encouraged through coursework to engage as active citizens, and are prepared for work experience and consider career pathways. Students engage with religious viewpoints and study christian ethics in some depth. All students will have the opportunity to enter Short Course GCSE qualifications in Citizenship and in Religious Studies, and some will be able to be examined for the Full Course GCSE in RS, thereby studying questions raised in the Philosophy of Religion.

RS remains a popular and respected A level, achieving excellent results in the study of philosophy and ethics.

Mr Ferguson is the Head of Religious Studies, Mrs Sztypuljak, Miss Burwell, Miss Larner, Mrs Baker, Mr Jemson, Miss Mole, Miss Buchanan and Miss Larkin teach within the department.
