Modern Languages

The Department runs a number of support clubs for KS4 pupils both at lunch time and after school (Please see your ML Teacher for details). As the exams draw closer, the language assistants will be running oral revision classes on Monday lunchtimes.

Cultural Opportunities and Trips

The Modern Languages Department constantly looks out for cultural opportunities to support pupils learning. Recently, a group of KS4 and 5 pupils went to the theatre to see a performance of a Spanish play. For the last three years the department has run a trip to Germany  for pupils in Years 8 to 10. This is a five day residential trip which offers pupils a real insight into German culture. Last year the Department ran a three day trip to Paris for Year 9 and 10 pupils, which we hope to repeat again in September.

The department also hosts days for foreign students to see what life in an English school is like. Our most recent event was with a group of Bosnian school children. Pupils from Years 10 and 11 paired up with the Bosnian children (most of whom had been orphaned during the recent troubles in Bosnia) and took them to lessons. They then had a lesson together with Miss Hockey and the Bosnian teachers. It was a very worthwhile learning experience for both sets of pupils, and as the Bosnians spoke very good English, it highlighted just how important learning a foreign language actually is!

Modern Languages has six full time members of staff, one part time, and two language assistants.

Head of Department Mrs J Fice, Key Stage 3 Co-ordinator Mr D Harding, Ms M Thompsett, Miss E Hockey, Miss Falcao-Pimental, Miss Wadsworth and Mrs C Barber (CSO).
